Jon - started with a gateway instrument; he played the alto saxophone in
elementary concert band. He proved to be a precocious player and, with limited
formal training, went on to teach himself guitar, bass, piano, and percussion.
Born and raised in Brunswick, Maine, at age 12 he fell into an enduring
collaboration with a small group of friends that went by many names, perhaps most
notably - Mouthful, the fans of which became known as Mouthfools.
Among this earliest crowd, Jon played with long-term friend and now PhD. in
Physics, Dr. Thomas Hughes.
Jon enjoyed the Summer of 89 working on Martha's Vineyard with long-time
contemporaires, Michel McGuire Bowe and Andres Llorente
in 'Sleeping Gypsy.'
He achieved an Associate in Arts degree from NYU, where he sharpened his
writing skills and developed his voice and presence, before leaving school to
pursue his art.
He moved to Boulder to recommence with the same 2 co-conspirators, to form a
folk-vocal trio, 'the Renders.' The Renders evolved into a wooden rock band of
tight, original compositions, primarily lead by Michael McGuire, where Jon refined
both his chops and voice. The Renders sampled a teasing taste of success, if only
because of the hard work and tuned ears of NYC audio-man, friend and manager
- Michael Primmer.
After 'the Renders', Jon would perform in jazz combos, front a recording project,
'the Rumpus', and founded a rap group 'the Kind', in addition to tirelessly writing
and performing his solo act.
In parallel with music, Jon continued studies in science and mathematics.
Between the simple beauty of youth in Maine and the endless urban impressions
of New York City, Jon developed a rich mix of styles in his music. Many of his
songs acknowledge a paradise lost, but with an appreciation for the nuances of
modern life. The resulting reconciliation becomes for Jon an eclectic folk-grass
with shades of all world music - to ultimately communicate his ideas.
Versed in theory and weathered by time, Jon has blossomed into an effective
composer/singer-song-writer whose self-titled premiere CD captures the
originality of his character and potential. Now, in addition to a number of singles
and instrumentals, he's slowly completing a second major body of work.
An accurate representation of what he has achieved and a taste of things to
come, Jon is joined by fine players to give an incredible sense of color and texture
to his voice and compositions.
The list of friends with whom he has worked includes -
Nina Storey - backing vocals
Coco Brown - backing vocals
Rosemary Butler - backing vocals
Doug Heywood - backing vocals
Ross Martin - guitars
Christian Teele - drums and percussion
Bijoux Barbosa - bass
Ron Bland- bass
John Magnie - accordion
Jamie Janover - slide-didgeridoo and hammer dulcimer
Eric Walser - mandolin
Bob Rebholz - alto saxophone
Lance Bendiksen - production, melodica, hammond organ, synthesizer
James Tuttle - engineering
Jon is an act to keep your eye on, performing both as a solo show, ranging from
progressive folk to loop-jams and with a full band. And in those quiet, reclusive
periods of his life, you can rest assured - that he is being creative someplace.
